Nothing could compare to a cup of coffee at my mom and dad’s house.

They were making their coffee using a percolator. (Not to be confused with Mary J. Blige.)

A percolator (without getting very specific) brews the coffee by continually cycling the boiling (or nearly boiling) brew through the grounds using gravity until the required strength is reached.

It was time to start the hunt for one at our place. (Actually, we own two, because we keep one in the Upper Peninsula.)

We found this fantastic percolator on Amazon. For around $40 (free shipping and arrives in 2 days if you have Prime), you can’t beat the price! We have saved money, because while we still love and support our local coffee brewers, we find ourselves less likely to run out to buy coffee when we love what we make at home.

Watch Ryan and I make our coffee in the video below.

How much coffee does it make? Our Hamilton Beach is a stainless steel 12 cup percolator (you can make less if you’d like).

How can I tell when the coffee is done?  A green light turns on. This also indicates that it is keeping your coffee warm.

How long does it take? It takes around a minute per cup. It takes a lot less time to brew than the old percolators that were popular in the 1970s. (The evening before, we set ours up so we only have to plug it in.)

How can I tell how much is made or how much is left? There is a viewing window that shows you the level made/left.

Does the cord come off? It does! For carrying to pour and for easier cleaning.

Can I use it for hot water? Yes! Then, you can use it for tea, hot cocoa or instant coffee. The Hamilton Beach Stainless Steel 12 Cup Percolator isn’t just for coffee, it can heat water too. This hot water can be used for tea, hot cocoa or instant coffee.

Can any of it go in the dishwasher? The stainless steel filter basket can goes in the dishwasher for easy cleanup.

Besides a local coffee place, we love this blend right here:

Dunkin’ Donuts Hazelnut

(Even my dad enjoyed it when he came to visit, and he typically dislikes any flavor to his coffee.)

Don’t forget to keep your coffee warm in my favorite mug: https://royalechristine.com/2018/12/17/yeti-love/

Happy brewing! Enjoy that java!
